This program prepares you for the rewarding role of a Caregiver Support Worker, focusing on the essentials of client care, including communication, ethical practices, and understanding how to support individuals facing age, disability, illness, or injury.

With insights into career pathways and future training opportunities, this foundation program is your first step into the caregiving field.

Please note: This program does not lead to licensing and is not equivalent to the regulated Health Care Assistant program.

A caregiver supports and assists individuals who need help with daily living due to age, illness, disability, or injury. Their responsibilities typically include:

  1. Personal Care
    • Assisting with bathing, dressing, grooming, and hygiene.
    • Helping with mobility and transfers.
  2. Meal Preparation
    • Cooking and serving meals according to dietary needs.
    • Ensuring proper nutrition and hydration.
  3. Medication Management
    • Reminding clients to take prescribed medications.
    • Monitoring for side effects or reactions.
  4. Companionship
    • Providing emotional support and conversation.
    • Engaging in recreational activities.
  5. Household Assistance
    • Light housekeeping, laundry, and maintaining a safe living environment.
    • Shopping for groceries and running errands.
  6. Transportation
    • Driving clients to appointments, social activities, or errands.
  7. Monitoring Health
    • Observing and reporting changes in physical or mental health.
    • Assisting with medical equipment (e.g., walkers or oxygen tanks).
  8. Advocacy
    • Acting as a liaison between the client, family, and healthcare providers.

Caregivers play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life and ensuring the safety and well-being of those they support.

  • Application Fee- $250 (non-refundable)

Employment:

At the end of this program, graduates will have developed foundational knowledge to be a Caregiver Support Worker.

Admission Requirements:

This program is taught in English. Standardized Test Scores/ Evidence: WCC In-house Language Assessment: 80% Overall in Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening. Evidence that 3 years of full-time secondary school (Grades 8-12) has been completed in English in a country where English is one of the principal languages. Evidence of post-secondary education completed in English in a country where English is one of the principal languages. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic or General: Minimum overall score of 5.5.Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) IBT: Overall score of 46 Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test (CLB PT): Listening 6, Speaking 6, Reading 5 and Writing 5Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP): Listening 6, Speaking 6, Reading 5 and Writing 5Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL): Overall Score of 40
